Split City Sticks Around for a 2nd Week!

Over the past 2 weeks, OBI has turned back into Split City,,, and this is a good thing. Our last venture in D1 saw Split City seldom and the OBI record suffered long enough for us to be shipped back to the lower D2 division.

According to rookie GM / Manager / Outfield Coach and sometime Han Solo, Chris Spillane, good shit happens when you hit the ball. And I agree, at 4-4, OBI is on pace for our best D1 finish to date. Currently, OBI / Split City / That Team Who Used to Fear D1,,, continues to be themselves and hit the ball well at the plate and play good defense against our Tourney level competition. I am sure it pisses them off way more than it amazes ourselves that we can be competitive in these climes...

Oh and did I mention that OBI currently sits 4th and simply needs Split City visits the next two weeks to make the playoffs,,, in D1 ?!?!?!!!!

Anyways, the past two weeks have been split DHs against both Those Guys and the Flying Squirrels. Game 1 of the DH was won both weeks with scores of 20-13 and 19-13 respectively. The loses were 7-15 and a heartbreaking 14-15 on a Grand Salami by one of FS's hot bats,,, wink wink...

The win against Those Guys started well with a 2-0 lead after the 1st. Then, after a Double Play two hitters into the second, OBI reeled off 11 consecutive hits plus a walk and scored 11 with two outs. Only Jayse and Nuta did not reach base in the inning, mainly because they were absent, just sayin'.

With Larry batting last in the lineup, he once again rolled it over to the top with positive results at 3-3, then with Jakob (3-4) and Tom (4-4) at the top, 9 of our 20 runs came from these 3... Hell, Tom scored 3 of our 7 runs in the finale...

This past week, the Flying Squirrels hit some serious shots and some for huge distance including a ~400' out being out of HRs. And the consistent hitting continued throughout OBIs lineup, but the top 7 had at least 3 hits apiece, sans only Tom at leadoff who was on base twice with a hit and a walk.

The second inning was a box party as we batted around not making the first out until the 9th batter in the inning. Again both offense and defense continue to impress, let's keep up the good work in this 2017 Season 5...

Go Split City !!! Go OBI !!!

OBI Reaches New Heights With Sweep!!!

OBI,, One Bad Inning,, Split City,, I'm Not Gay But $20 is $20,,, all good team names but this weeks moniker is simple, Winning!

OBI has officially give Coach Spillane his first victory, first weekly sweep, and as a team, defeated the Heights for the first time. Conversation amongst the Heights players was that they were a bit tired from 40+ Worlds the past weekend, but totally gave props to our players and the offense produced as everyone hit well all night and we outscored them 36-20 in the two games.

Here are the highlights by game...

Game 1 --
  • Jakob was a good fill in lead off going 7-9 on the evening.
  • Clint had 5 hits and drove in 4 runs.
  • Brian's 5 hits included 4 Doubles and a Home Run late in Game 2 to put it on ice. His 8 RBIs were split evenly between the games.
  • John was 7-8 hitting clean up and had a Triple and a Base on Balls also.
  • Spillane's 7-9 include 3 Doubles, a Triple and 6 RBIs total.
  • Michael matched John's 7-8 and he had a Walk and 6 RBIs as well.
  • Jayse was 6-9 with a Double a 2 RBIs.
  • Nuta kept rolling on a 5-9 night.
  • JR had 3 hits and pitched his ASS off. No Small Feat There I Tell Ya !!!
So, ya, we played with 9 players,,, just like the Heights, and they applaud how we hit and took better advantage of the gaps in the outfield.

I have my contacts in already, see y'all tonight !!!

The Torch Has Been Passed,,,

The only constant in life (and softball) is change... As OBI remains the same, a change at the top occurred to start 2017's Season 5, as Chris Spillane has taken the helm of this long running softball team.

In good hands, finally, One Bad Inning headed into Week 1 against a familiar foe in Warning Track Power. However, at evenings end, Warning Track Power hit 2 more Home Runs for OUTS than OBI hit all night. Which means that WTP totaled 4 big flies to OBI's 0...

That said, the double header loss totally took the wind from our sails and we head into Week 2 versus BFF, inc. Yes, the team that won the league last season.  Chris has vowed to contact Split City to visit this week in hopes of obtaining his first victory prior to Thanksgiving as Head Coach / Manager...

Of course, much of the Game 1 blame goes to the RC fielder who was playing catcher since we only had 8 to start with and 9 once Jakob arrived. A fillin, Nick, was able to assist us in game 2 and we had a full 10 players to do battle.

After losing 14-5 in game 1, We held WTP to 12 runs and only scored in two innings ourselves. The 6-run 4th was our highlight in the 7-12 loss.

Most everyone batted and some players actually got on base, including myself by finally walking late in game 2 instead of taking a foul tip (just throw the man a frickin strike)... Anyways, i am almost better now LOL...

It was great to see John back on the field and that other new guy played well too,,, ummm what was his name, oh Ya,,,,, Juan Carlos... That was it!

At the time of this blog post, it was still unknown if Tom stuck around last week long enough to buy a pitcher.  PS. It looked like a $10 Swing there, Mr. Puc...

The Rains Save the Day and Split City LIVES !!!

We needed a sweep to get into the thick of the playoff chase. Split City reared her ugly head in a kind and gentle way (in the form of a monsoon attack) to assist with a 2nd game victory to barely keep those playoff dreams alive,,, by a thread.

The only redemption is this weeks opponent,,, 0-12 Scared Hitless. Who are obviously, just what their name says…

Our team name may soon be Split City, permanently. But that is a story for another day…

We scored 22 runs in the two games,,, 18 of those came in the bottom of the first of Game 1 and the last inning (4th) of Game 2. Basically, the offense was a no show otherwise. Consistently Inconsistent…

During our 8 run first of Game 1, the top 8 spots in the order raked well. Brian hit a 3-run Big Fly, Michael had a 3-run Double, and after the 8, Nuta grounded out to short to score the 8th run.

The 10 run top of the 4th inning was wet and wild!!! The monsoon rolled in with full force, along with the rains. It was nice to be in the dugout and batting instead of in the field.

The scoring started with a base clearing, immmm, Single off the LFers glove by Michael, followed by Singles by Nuta, JR, Larry, and back2back2back2back Doubles by Spillane, Brian, DC and Juan.

But it was (I believe ) DCs Double that was the wondrous circus event of the night. With the winds howling and the rain sheeting down, a long fly to LC became the ultimate viral sensation as the ball turned toward center at least 10 feet, then wildly swung back a good 20 feet to fall helplessly onto the wet grass or warning track… Whatever, it was the coolest thing ever.

This pushed our 2-1 lead to 12-1 and what followed was a basic 1-2-3 inning (IN THE RAIN) to close out the 4th and final inning as the umpire was done with this weather front… Ball Game !!!

Still no stats, but we have blog again this week !

We Don’t Need No Split City!!!

But most of the time, we do need 10 players…

OBI showed in full force versus Midlife Crisis this past week. The sweep was impressive as game scores were 20-6 and 15-0 …

Game 1 started with a phone call to Larry, who was sitting at his desk at work all the while thinking we had late games. Thus, we played on with 9 players until his arrival in the top of the 5th inning. JR was once again wildly effective on the mound and the defense almost didn’t suck behind him.

By the at time the game was well in hand as the score was 18-6. Larry did single and score in the inning.

We batted thru the order twice in the game, both in the second and fourth innings. Everyone scored at least one run with Spillane leading the way with 4.

DC batted 5 times, collected 5 hits and had only 2 RBIs. That is on Brian,,, as he had hits in his middle 3 at bats driving in 7 Runs with a Sac Fly (AB1), 2 Big Flies and a Double,,, then he tried to kill the pitcher. Quite the complete afternoon.

Tom had back-to-back Doubles, while Spillane did the same with Triples. Everyone had at lest two hits sans Larry who was just 1 for 1.

Game 2 was another run rule, but more importantly,,, a shutout. The 15-0 final was a quick and efficient game of 3  2/3 innings.

The home team was led by DC on the mound and a good defensive performance even with Michael playing in the OF #Scary…

No HRs recorded by Brian in this game but I did see another Sac Fly in the book. Clint led the way with 4 hits and Matt was 3-3.

Again, everyone scored at least one, with JR being the exception. But that is ok, he had the walk off hit driving in the 15th run to send us home early….

But then, Brian, Larry and I stayed and played two more games… I need a nap…

ps. we will clear up a few questions in the scorebook and have stats available later this week.

Split City is a No-Show!!!

But just barely...

7-1 BFF-inc. is in first place this season. 3-5 OBI is not, but there is still hope for the playoffs...

13-15 & 10-11 losses to BFF definitely showed that we are competitive this seasons front runner. Now it is up to us to keep Split City at arms length,,, and win out if we want a third consecutive chance at the postseason tourney...

We start tonight versus one of our long time rivals, MidLife Crisis. I think this a great place to begin a run, mainly since we are here now and we need to go on a run and win out or this season will not end with much more than a 8th week double header against another team that did not perform as well as it thought it would in week 1 although they may have actually played well in that first weeks two games and possibly faded over time or just sucked from the get go, though i doubt they would have started slow then picked up a few wins the sucked again at the end, but it is not out of the question.

And no, i totally had no point in that long ass run-on sentence/ paragraph. Oh hell, I am doing it again........

Now, where should I be, oh ya...  In Game 1 last week, BFF rolled to a 12 run lead before we even came to bat. If only we had convinced the umpire to start the game in the bottom of the first,, we would have won 12-3. Nice!

Offensively, it was all about consistency, as we scored in all 5 innings (3,2,1,4,3). Stand outs were abundant as follows:
-- Tom collects 2 hits, scores 2 and had 2 RBIs
-- Jayse collects 2 hits, scores 1
-- Spillane had a Double and 2 RBIs
-- Brian collects 2 hits, scores 2 and had 2 RBIs
-- DC collects 2 hits including a Han Solo HR
-- John collects 3 hits, scores once
-- Matt singled and had a Sac Fly
-- Clint singled and scored
-- Jakob scored twice and had 3 hits
-- Michael had 2 hits, scores once and had an RBI
-- JR singled and had a Sac Fly
-- Larry had 2 hits, scores once

The second game was much the same but 2 scoreless innings in the 6th and 7th sent us to our doom as BFF eeked out the 1 run victory.

Brians 3-run Tater in the 3rd put us up 6-3. Then after a 4 run outburst in the 5th to take the lead again by 3 runs,,, we were done.

So, another opportunity is in front of us tonight... Goooo OBI,,, Stay Home SPLIT CITY,,, give me a Broom so I can clear a path towards .500... then we can think playoffs lol...

Larry Survives Trip to San Clemente as Split City Continues Run with OBI

On a long and lonesome highway, east of Blythe, C.A.
You can feel the eyes upon you,

As your vette spins outa control...

Well, something like that anyways... Larry survived the trip to San Clemente on Thursday night, however harrowing the spin and backwards trip across the desert transpired. And so did OBI !!!

After scoring 4 runs in the 5 inning Game 1 effort on a mere 9 hits, OBI went all Split City on Old Glory to win game 2 14-9. The evening was fun on the Launching Pad (aka Field 3) as OBI welcomed back KC for a visit and he collected 4 hits on the night including a Big Fly.  DC topped that with 2 HRs of his own on the night including a Grand Slam.

Game 1 was all about being quietly offensive. Tom was the only player to collect 2 hits. Same number of Sac Flies that Matt had in the game.  It was all about first inning defense as well with Old Glory hitting well and posting an opening 10 spot...

DC's 2nd inning lead off Home Run was our first run. Matt followed in the 3rd with his first Sac Fly. Down 15-2 going to the top of the 5th, with the bases loaded, Clint and Matt hit productive Sac Fly outs and the game was over one batter later.

Game 2 started with a two-out 2 spot by Split City (errrr, OBI) as Mike Doubled (first of three in the game) in a run and JR singled following to score him. In the second inning, Tom and Clint started with singles and were pushed across by Spillane and KC's singles (the latter with 2 outs).

Old Glory scored 3 to pull within one run but Mike's second Double was followed by Kyle's Double pushing the lead to two runs.

In the next two innings both Defense and Offense shone. With two outs in the top of the 4th, Michael ran down a deep drive in RF making an over the shoulder catch to end a scoring threat. Topping that in the top of the 5th, the infamous 6-8-5 putout on a ball that would have loaded the bases work out well as DC ran down the popup, Tom fielded the deflected ball and threw to Clint at 3B for an important force out.  Old Glory scored no runs in either inning.

Meanwhile, on offense, DC connected for a satisfying lead extending Grand Slam with one out in the 4th inning to score 4 including Spillane, Jakob and KC. Then in the 5th, KC hammered one out to LF scoring Spillane and Jakob. With Matt scoring in front of those 3, the lead extended to 13-3.

Game should have been over there but the Umpire thought it was only the 4th inning. Game On !!  And Old Glory put up a 4 spot to answer back in the 6th. OBI pushed across one and it could have been more but for a Double Play that included a tag out at the plate.

After a less painful top of the 7th, the split was in and folks were happy once again in the city...

The blog is back for a week, maybe more...

Stats for this season are being calculated and are anticipated to be posted on Monday evening!

Split City Returns After Larry’s No-No

On the wind swept plains of Victory Lane Sports Park, a call from the corn fields whispered across the Launching Pad that is Field 3... The conspiratorial whispers from the first base dugout stayed muted as Larry pitched into the fourth inning with nary a hit by the opposing team.

The 2-0 lead after two, blossomed to 10 in the third and topped at 23 after a 13 run outburst. No one realized the real story... In the dugout,,,

After two innings, the score was still close and discussion turned to Midlife Crisis not scoring any runs. At this point, there was more in what was not said than confirmation of the shutout. After a 1-2-3 third inning, the tension was mounting but no words were spoken about what was going down on the field.

After a 13 run top of the 4th, One Bad Inning led 23-0. This forced Midlife Crisis to score 9 runs just to stay in the game. To do this they needed an OBI type rally. They first needed to get a hit or One Bad Inning History would unfold in front of our eyes. With two outs in the fourth inning,,, a ground ball got by the first baseman,,, and well,,,

Larry faced 3 over the minimum in the 4 inning No-Hit Shutout. A ground ball to third in both the first and second innings that would not stay in the glove, caused the throws to be just late at first base.

Then with two outs in the fourth inning, a third ground ball went to first base and allowed another runner. Slightly misplayed, ticked off Joe’s glove and bounced into right field. The discussion was quick and unanimous, the bounce of the ball was true and an error accessed.

One out to go! The unspoken words between J.R. and Michael were carried between them as adrenaline flowed freely in the near empty dugout. A scary yet lazy fly ball fell deftly into the shortstops glove and history was made by Larry Schouten and the One Bad Inning Defense behind him,,, a 4-inning No Hitter indelibly etched into the fabric of everything OBI.

Congratulations Larry!!! Congratulations OBI!!! Thank you softball gods for allowing us to witness such an awesome event,,, even if we did not speak of it until afterwards.

Both J.R. and I were once again able to breathe following the final out. Wonder I did how long I had really been holding my breath…

Annnnnnnd then Split City showed up in game 2’s 11-20 loss. But who gives a shit?

This night was all about Larry’s No-No… Does not get any more special than that…

Those Guys Again...

One Bad Inning had another close visit from sleepy ol' Split City, to no avail... Those Guys were able to hand us another sweep, winning the games by counts of 21-9 and 12-9...

OBI was extremely consistent in everything except starting lineup and the batting order. Had late afternoon add ons, folks running late, and people hitting out of order. But that all worked out as Brent hit 3rd and Brian T. in the clean up spot where he was good for two Big Flies on the evening.

The consistency portion of the effort:

9 - Runs scored in each game
18 & 19 - Hits in each game
36 & 37 - At Bats in each game
21 & 12 - Runs Given up in each game

Extraordinary Efforts on the night:

Brian T. with his two HRs including a 3-run shot in the bottom of game 1's first inning. This gave us a 4-1 lead which was our only lead that lasted to another innning... Just Sayin'

Clint had hits in his first 6 ABs and was 6-7 for the night...

Fill-In Juan had 5 hits but did not wear pajama bottoms...

Pretty much everyone else had 3 hits and scored a couple runs ,,, yeah!

Michael had a triple in game 1 while both Clint and Juan doubled in Game 2. That does it for any / all extra base hit talk.

Consistent yet Cray Cray,,, Sad yet Demented ...

We may be short a player or two this week but should bounce back next week and have a good 14 in the lineup. Just feels like that sort of season... ;~) Play Ball !!!

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly ...

This past Thursday, One Bad Inning lost two to KG/AB (aka The Heights). Split City made a brief showing in Game 2, but left faster than Matt after game 1 due to a sore hand (aka he is lonely)...

Great, two sentences in and I am already spewing negativity in the form of masturbation jokes. Oh, prolly should not have explained that one. Ummm, may standard out comes next,,, but I digress...

This weeks movie review is a 1966 Italian epic Spaghetti Western story played out across the confines of Field 2 at Victory Lane Sports Park. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly film is seen as a highly influential example of the Western film genre and one of the greatest films of all time.

The games played on Field 2,, meh,,, not so much...

The Good = 32 Runs Scored in 10 Innings.
The Bad = 51 Runs Allowed in 9 Defensive Innings.
The Ugly = Giving our opponent 4,5,6 outs during a few innings, conservatively speaking...

Our offense continues to be a work in progress in the upper divisional play. Our Defense is typically one that keeps us in games... Needless to say, improving our "D" will go a long way to ensuring we play more like Split City over time.

Game 1 was all about our first inning offensively as we sent 12 men to the plate scoring 6 runs.

Game 2 was much more competitive as we were tied at 9 after 2 innings and jumped ahead by 8 going into the bottom of the 4th inning. The second inning explosion included 3-run Home Runs from both J.R. and John...

Brothers John and Brian Bartinelli had 7 hits in the contest and were 12-14 for the night. J.R. had 6 RBIs in his 3 Game 2 At Bats... Jayse had 2 Triples,,, and Tom & Michael each had 3 hits...

Everyone contributed in both games and as we continue to do the same,,, Split City will come back and eventually be kicked to the curb by Let's Take Two ...

Okay, a lame Sweep reference but hey, at least you have a blog entry to read. Oooouuuuuttttt !!!

By The Time I Get to Tampa,,, the TOC Will Be Starting ...

In a magical land far, far to the east of Phoenix, there lies a little town called Lakeside, FL... Ya, I know this should have been Orlando but that just did not work for me...

OBI will be representing at the SSUSA Tournament of Champions as Michael Lee will be playing with the 55+ Major division AZ Legends. It really is more impressive sounding than reality. That said, this tourney is of higher prestige than the World Championship tournament in Vegas each September.

But the realllllly importante' thing is,, Life is slowing down enough that I feel like writing again. In fact, later this month, the musical group PreCog will be releasing a song (Love is...) that I wrote lyrics for and gifted to them. Ya, pretty sappy... But it shows that the creative mental juices are flowing again...

Am almost caught up on the stats and will be posting again after we play this week. Anticipating 2016 final stats dropped into the blog before I head to Floriday...

Laters !!!
